About the New Hampshire permit test

To get your learner permit in New Hampshire, you must be at least 15 years 6 months years old and pass a written knowledge test based on the official New Hampshire Driver Handbook. The exam is multiple choice and is offered at most DMV field offices. Bring proof of identity, proof of New Hampshire residency, and a parent or guardian consent form if you are under 18 — full list on our New Hampshire DMV checklist page.

Once you hold the learner permit, you can practice driving with a licensed adult age 25 or older. New Hampshire requires 40 hours of supervised practice (10 at night) before you become eligible for a provisional license, and that count is checked at the road test. The full New Hampshire GDL law summary covers the curfew, passenger, and cell-phone rules.

New Hampshire driver guides

Beyond the practice questions, these short guides cover the parts of getting your New Hampshire license that the exam itself doesn't address — what documents to bring, what to expect on the road test, how the graduated license stages work, and the wrong-answer patterns we see most often in our own data.

How long should I study?

Most teens who pass on the first try put in three to six hours of focused study spread across one to two weeks. Cramming the night before tends to backfire because the test mixes wording in ways that punish memorization without understanding. Use Permit Prep's topic drills to find your two weakest categories, study those first, then run the full New Hampshire practice quiz to confirm you're ready.
