DMV Permit Practice Tests by State

Permit Prep covers every U.S. state plus the District of Columbia. Each state page links to a focused practice set for road signs, traffic laws, right of way, speed limits, and safe driving practices, with the right speed limits and graduated license ages baked in for that state.

Why does state matter? The basic rules of the road are similar everywhere, but each state's permit exam pulls from its own driver handbook and tests on its own speed limits, graduated driver license restrictions, blood alcohol rules, and right-of-way conventions. Studying generic questions can leave you guessing on the small details that decide whether you pass on the first try. Picking your state below makes sure every question matches the test you'll actually take.

How to use this list

If you already know which state you'll test in, click straight through to that state's page. If you've recently moved and aren't sure which handbook applies to you, the rule of thumb is simple: you take the permit test in the state where you're an actual resident, which is usually the state listed on your parents' driver licenses and your school records. Out-of-state students at college are usually fine keeping their home-state permit, but you'll want to confirm with that state's DMV before scheduling a road test.

Each state page below also links to topic-specific drills. Topic drills are the fastest way to fix a weak area: if you keep missing right-of-way questions, spend 15 minutes on the right-of-way set instead of redoing the entire mixed test.
